Water Hookup and Water Pump Problems

We camped this weekend at Ponderosa State Park near McCall, ID. The park has full hookups, but when we attached the hose and turned the water on, there was a squealing noise coming from the coach connection (the water pump was off) and we had low water pressure inside the coach. Knowing that we couldn't listen to that noise while we were camping, we disconnected the water supply and filled the coach's fresh water tank and turned the water pump on. When using the bathroom faucet and sometimes the kitchen faucet, the water pump would fire rapidly and the lights would flicker. Didn't happen while using the shower or flushing the toilet.(We were plugged into a 30 amp connection which may or may not have anything to do with our water pump problem). Now we are plugged in at home and the bathroom faucet is still causing the rapid fire pump sound. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

This is a simplified drawing of the water system in a typical trailer.

Maybe this will help understand how the water flow works...

  • For some reason your system is not pressurizing itself. Start at the connection (your water pump shouldn't be on) and then check all fittings. Mine usually squeals a few seconds than stops.
  • I had problems with getting ANY type of water thru my system after I installed a whole system water filter. I installed the filter canister without the filter cartridge and then sanitized the whole system and completed a system flush to remove the bleach. Everything worked perfectly until I installed the filter cartridge. My pump caveated and squealed and produced NO water. Further inspection resulted with me finding that I had the filter cartridge in backwards. I fixed my mistake and have had no issues to date with the water pump system. The pump squealing noise you hear is the pump “starving” for supply water. Something in your system is causing the water to NOT flow freely. Start from the main water supply and work toward your pump and beyond if necessary. The restriction should identify it’s self at the point where you have no more water or a visible reduction in water supply. Hope this helps.

  • Agree ^^^^^
The squealing noise & low water pressure is from a faulty inlet check valve on 'city water' connection

The rapid fire pump cycling......pull the aerators on faucets and check for plugging.
Run pump with aerators removed, check pump action & flow
  • Sounds like a bad check valve at the city water connection. My guess anyhow.
