We are newbies - want to make a smart purchase :)

When we bought used, the salesman was excellent but the manager with the contract "ambushed" us with an offer for a warranty from a third party at what she claimed was a can't refuse price. I didn't take it and when picking it up the next day one of the service guys told me it was completely void if we ever took it on a gravel road.
