Renting is a good idea. If you decide to buy, get a used unit to start.
But, don't be in a hurry. Look at everything and ask lots of questions.
There is a lot of experience and information available on this forum.
If you're upgrading your truck, consider a 3/4 ton. You don't see many people complaining because they have too much truck. :)
