CT has a luxury tax so forget that one. NJ is pretty densely populated...okay if you like that. Lower NY is commuteable by train but we have generous taxes (for the government that is)...think Poughkeepsie and preferably south of there (long commute from Poughkeepsie and unlike UK public transport is pricey here in usa..unfortuneatly) and trust me you don't want to drive it (think traffic).
Check out boondockerswelcome.com for free stays by welcoming US rv oweners.
Florida, given its 12 month rving possibilities has MANY rv's to choose from NY/NJ not so much...but the sun can play havoc on rv's from florida unless they were stored covered. In florida you can find just about any kind you want...ny not so much.
Oh, what is your timeframe for travel...winter limits you southern areas, spring opens up more. Summer is not something I would do unless you really like crowds. Boondocking is a nice option for you if you get the right unit (think free camping!) in neat places like the west (not so much in the east unless you like walmart to park the night or rest areas).
Auto fuel prices are more in NY than NJ. Look at gasbuddy.com (the heat map) to see what fuel prices are like in USA (way cheaper than UK).
That is off the cuff info.
