Weigh Stations?

In Oregon, I have stopped at closed weigh stations to get a quick, easy and free weight of my motorhome.

Maybe other states leave their scales on?

My brother in law works at the weight station off 74 in Illinois. He said that people who use RV for personal use do not need to stop at the weight scale. If someone is using the RV for commercial purpose, that is a different story.

And how would they know if used for personal use or commercial?

Not sure about Illinois, but in Ca the license plate is different for commercial vehicles. Most who have a truck in Ca know this. They also know the registration is much higher. What they might not know is that if they signed an affidavit saying it's never going to be used to haul or tow anything, then get caught, it's a huge fine. Then it'll need to be re-registered with all applicable fees paid. As in back fees.

An example of a commercial RV might be one that says RED BULL across it. :) Could be that might draw attention.

As for weigh stations in Ca, when they are closed, it's illegal to enter outside of an emergency. And no, recreational vehicles do not need to stop.

This has been discussed extensively over on the Escapees Heavy Duty Truck forum. The consensus is that we do not. In fact most states generally do not want private vehicles of any kind cluttering up the scales.

We've been towing with the Volvo for more than 10 years and have never stopped at scales anywhere.

Within the last few years the state of Maryland started requiring all vehicles over 5 Ton Gross Vehicle Weight to stop at Weigh Stations. I've never stopped there and I've never seen Motorhomes there. It's the only state I've traveled through that made the distinction between All Commercial Vehicles and All Vehicles over 5 Ton GVW at Weigh Stations.

Yes, they do that here in Washington too. They turn the display so you can see it when you stop.

Here's a question I have regarding personal vs. commercial use of a MH :

If someone rents one from one of those RV rental places that have their advertisement plastered all over it, is that considered personal or commercial?
