I grew up as a teen on a farm - after our family had come back from Alaska in 1976. So we had a couple of tractors and lawnmowers to drive and of course Dad being the good man he is, encouraged me to drive anything I could, especially with a trailer behind it. At a young age of 14-15 I was driving the car around the farm - big boat, 1973 Dodge Monaco - and towing trailers whenever he wanted me to. That's probably how I got practice at backing up. It really did help later on, when my wife and I purchased a used 1989 Suburban and our first TT.
Of course there were times when we couldn't go anywhere on the weekends with the RV because we didn't have a ton of money. But I was lucky enough to come into a decent bit of money due to a lawsuit, and that was around the same time when gas started going up horrendously - we looked into permanent campgrounds and settled on one about 2 hours from our house, which is where we still "camp" in the 40' Four Winds. It doesn't move but DW still calls it "camping" :)
My family also spent a lot of time in an RV growing up driving around; then for 8 months four of us lived in the same MH while Dad built the family house.
I guess all this is less "ability" than "mindset". But it helps that when we got married we asked for, and received, a lot of camping gear that pushed DW more into the outdoors. We've been financially planning a lot, to continue RV'ing for as long as humanly possible, even after retirement.
I enjoy the outdoors when possible - plus we are tired of the snow and extreme cold this winter. Going up north on weekends rejuvenates us and reduces stress.
