Any late model 3/4 ton will do preferably a diesel especially if you will be towing in the mountains.
OP - do you know what payload rating you need? Have you figured it out? Tell us what payload rating you need and you can get better information. Everyone on here is speculating - blind leading the blind.
You are confused on this. I'm not saying diesel is the only way to go.
But payload is not a factor. The diesel engine weight is on the front axle. Very little weight of the RV is transferred to the front axle.
The rear axle capacity is really the deciding payload factor.
Both gas and diesel have basically the same rear axle capacity.
Yes the gasser may have more overall payload but you generally cannot take advantage of it with a bumper pull trailer that sits behind the rear axle.
What you can take advantage of is the additional torque and pulling power of the diesel.
When it comes to towing heavy the only advantage the gasser has is that it is initially cheaper. All other factors favor the diesel.
There will be nothing marginal in terms of power or payload when it come to pulling a 12K trailer with a late model diesel truck
