That truck will have a 6.0l engine and a 4 speed transmission. You'll get a much better bang for the buck with the next generation with the 6 speed transmission.
With the weight you are looking at, you will likely find the 6.0 with a 4 speed to be a bit of a pain. There isn't enough torque and you'll find you need to rev it in 2nd and 3rd alot. The extra 2 gears give a lot of flexibility to the engine.
In that series of truck - I'd look for the 8.1 if you are limited to that era. I think they can be found with the allison transmission - usually significantly cheaper than the Duramax cousins.
