A friend is a safety manager for Conway Trucking. He said they teach their drivers to wait until they can see both headlights as others stated above.
If you don't have a rear camera and can't see your trailer, this system works, giving you a LOT of clearance. I have a camera and can see when my toad is clear, so I can come back over a little sooner.
