Take your rig to a fairly level parking lot. Make sure your mirrors are in their normal alignment. Place an object such as a safety cone on the ground approximately 25 feet behind the back end of the passenger side of the rig. While sitting with your normal driving posture, notice where the bottom of the cone shows on the mirror. Align a small strip of highly visible tape horizontally on the mirror so it aligns with the bottom of the cone.
When you pass someone, don't start to merge back over until you see that the tires of the vehicle you passed are above the tape line. This is just one indicator you can use along with others mentioned here to make sure it's safe.
