Actually for my last trailer it was 26 years and not 20 and you couldn't tell that it had been outside in the elements all those years. I think saying it looked "brand new" is stretching things some, but your belief in what you are doing is somehow "protecting your investment" is a little far fetched. As already mentioned a trailer is NOT AN INVESTMENT and two exact trailers 5 years later will be worth about the same whether they were kept outside or inside and probably the cost of storage for those 5 years could easily exceed by several times any loss for a trailer being kept outside exclusively.
I keep mine at home along side the house and don't know what I would do if I couldn't do that since trying to pack everything up for the type of trips we take would be close to impossible w/o the unit at the house for at least a couple of weeks.
