As a female who travels alone, I have a three-tiered security system.
1. Early warning system (dog)
2. Strong deterrent (bear spray)
3. Revolver (not suitable for Canada, of course). I also have a concealed-weapons permit.
Most of the time I feel quite safe even though I often stay in deserted camp sites with no cellular signal. I love having a whole NFS loop to myself! As some have pointed out in other threads, you're probably more in danger on the freeway than in your camp.
I'd like to plan a trip to AK next year and am considering maybe traveling along with another female with her own rig just for safety and to share the experience.
