AFAIK you can buy propane in the valley so no need to conserve or freeze.
Second battery is pretty much a given in these circumstances. Charging the battery quickly is just as important with limited generator hours. To fast charge a battery you need the voltage up around 14.4 to 14.9 volts. Some converters do this... many do not and you just get a trickle at 13.6 volts. Best to dig in and get the converter model number for best answers.
Even if you get the buddy heater you will still want to make the most of your generator time.
