I'm going with a different perspective here. I wouldn't take a coach into an area where chains were required unless I had ample experience driving a car under those conditions. Most Californians do not. I took our FT4WD Grand Cherokee into Yosemite Valley twice when it was driving snow. That vehicle did not 'require' chains. I saw no motorhomes being driven. I did see numerous big SUV's & trucks chained up & all over the road. Inexperience.
I actually agree with your perspective as I have no experience driving anything in snow or ice. If I check the weather and it looks bad or I get to a point where chains are required, I will likely go home unless I am already almost there and turning back isn't the better option. My plan is to have them because HAVING them is required even if using them isn't required. I also plan to take 140 into Yosemite where chains are rarely required (to actually use them not just have them) at the end of March. Hopefully it will all work out. :h
