We also found running the furnace really impacts battery charge. We purchased a catalytic heater. Used the catalytic during the day as needed (being sure to keep a window cracked). We never ran the catalytic at night when sleeping.
We keep the furnace thermostat turned to about 45 degrees at night (turned off during the day)...used good sleeping bags (takes a lot of blankets to equal a good sleeping bag) and warm pajamas (even wore a wool hat ;-). Turned the catalytic on about an hour before we were ready to get up. Cooking breakfast also helped to warm things up in the morning.
Learned lots of ways to reduce heat loss.
- Covered the entrance to the Class C cab area with a heavy blanket.
- Cover the ceiling vents with insulation.
- Used foil backed insulation to cover a couple of larger windows at night.
- If your air conditioner has vents in the ceiling...close them
With our 23ft class C we could last two or three nights on one battery before requiring a recharge.
Enjoy, cold weather camping is a bit challenging but a lot of fun. Nothing like a good hot campfire in the evening...hot on one side cold on the other but just right in the middle ;-).
