100# Propane Cylinder Transport

I was looking at getting a 100# propane cylinder to supplement my 2x 30# cylinders when running the generator. My concern is that these are vertical tanks, and I don't believe you are supposed to transport them laying down. How do those of you who transport 100# tanks do it?

I've seen a lot of people using these tanks at RV parks, but never stopped anyone to ask.

Edit: also any tips to getting them in and out of the truck bed?
  • I have 3 100# tanks. I fill them myself from my 500 gal home tank. It won't hurt anything to haul them lying down, I do it all the time, just try to keep them from rolling around.
  • Any ASME tank you put in/on your truck needs to be securely mounted to the truck. An alternative is to use the same size propane cylinder that can be lashed/chained onto the truck.
  • I have 25.5" between the hitch rails and the tailgate, and used to have a 13" high toolbox there with no interference. I could easily put several of these in that area, side by side, and have plenty of clearance. They're also small enough to be easily managed for filling and hooking up. I would just need to find a good way to secure them. Looks like I could mount some 1x4 boards with bolts running through them to mate with the mounting holes on the tank brackets, and use wingnuts for easy install/uninstall.

    Get three 40#

I believe bottles need to be off the truck for filling so consider that.
Lots of options to mount smaller bottles.

Yeah, I think I'm going to go the multiple smaller tank route. I just need to figure out whether to go with 3x40#, 4x30#, or 5-6x 20#.

  • You can transport them in a truck bed, vertically. The cost of the two ASME tanks plus installation is greater than a new name brand generator that uses gasoline.
  • As this is for boondocking with the generator, that's not really an option. I'm wondering if a couple of these mounted on the frame (high off the ground, on my RV) might be a viable solution.
  • Most 100# tanks are either rented or leased. The propane supplier will deliver and place the tank for you.
