I agree that everyone should be able to drive a stick - BUT - while she's still "new" (and there's so many more distractions these days) - I'd start her in a beat-up automatic until she attains that "driving is a natural reflex" - then maybe move her into something cuter and manual?
Also - newer vehicles often have different ignition keys: the one the kid uses can limit the speed; and will refuse to play the radio until the seatbelt is buckled, for example... (at least that's how it works on Fords)
