1987 Ford Bronco II

I asked this another forum and have gotten no replies. I am looking at purchasing a 1987 Ford Bronco II. Does anyone know if it is 4 down towable? It has an automatic transmission and a push button transfer case.

  • There is a neutral position on the transfer case.
You have to remove the electric shift motor and manually turn the selector shaft to neutral.

You can get a drive shaft disconnect kit that works well also.
  • I called the owner and he looked at the owner's manual, it is not towable. Thank you all for your input, especially you Brodie3AZ, good idea about the owner's manual.
  • Does the vehicle have it's Owners Manual? Your question may be answered there.
  • As far as I know you would need a manual transfer case (shifter on the floor) and manual locking hubs on the wheels.
  • There was a modification to add a neutral position to the shift control. Alternately you may convert to manual transfer case shifter.

They were never a very good vehicle to begin with. Why would you want an old one now when there are lots of good vehicles capable of being towed 4 down?

Call me an oldie type of person. I would really like one from the 70s, but they are $20,000 plus so I thought I would get something that is the same year as our MH. My DW does not like Jeeps and I am not a Chevy fan. So that puts us into the Ford arena. I thought of getting a full size Bronco till I came across a couple of Bronco IIs that are nice looking. But I wanted to know about 4 down towable before purchasing.

  • If the transfer case has a NEUTRAL position, it might be towable four down, depending on the model of the transfer case. Not ALL two speed transfer cases can be towed four down. I don't remember right off hand which ones should not be towed, but the Jeep CJ7 had one.
Also, if the Bronco has lock out hubs on the front, some towing instructions say to have them in the free position, some say to have them in the locked position.
You might wish to do a google search for the Owners Manual and see what it says.
