Hi Reg,
I upgraded my stock Super Duty receiver to the Reese Tow Beast, 2 1/2". I my case I did not need more pulling capability, I needed more tongue weight capability in both WC and WD mode.
Many receivers are rated for weight distrusting to be 10% of the pull ratings. In my case the Tow Beast, now called the Titan, was rated for 14,000# pull and 1,700# WD. While I was not ever going to pull, 14,000# I do need the 1,700# WD capability for the 10,000# of camper I pull.
As was mentioned they do make a 2 1/2 to 2" sleeve so you can use the truck with smaller 2" draw bars etc. Just buy the brand sleeve from the same receiver brand. Some brands do not exactly interchange.
Reese makes a 2 1/2" WD shank that tapers to 2" to go into the Reese HP trunnion bar hitch head. Looks like this
Here is the post on changing the receiver. Eat your Wheaties before doing this.... If I did not have 3/4" drive sockets with a breaker bar there is no way 1/2 inch anything is going to get them bolts off. My 1/2" impact just bounced. I didn't have my 1" impact at the time. They fought me to the last thread...all of them...
F350 Receiver Upgrade - (Pic's)
Reese added some gussets to this receiver, now called the Titan and up'ed the ratings.
If it was me, I would get the 2 1/2" as in your case your loaded TW is going to rise. A 2" shank or receiver is a toy next to the 2 1/2". After seeing the 2 1/2" it is a wonder how they get a 1,500# or 1,700# rating on a 2" receiver. I had a 1,700# WD rated 2" Putnam XDR on my 2500 Suburban, while it had the rating there was no 2" WD shank for a WD hitch to ever go with it.
The only down side to the 2 1/2" setup is the hitch shank weighs a few pounds more. I have no regrets doing the conversion and I'm not worried I'm going to have a hitch issue.
I also had to go to 3/8" saftey chain hooks, not a big problem, just a heads up in case yours will not fit. See my post.
Hope this helps and good luck
John
