Hi John,
I have not found a WD shank for a 2 inch receiver rated over 1500 lbs on tongue weight. Thank you for pointing this out.
I own a 1600 lb tongue weight rated forged 2 inch shank. I experienced a hitch head failure and never want to be without a back up system incase of a WD hitch failure again.
It seems to me that for a ball mount trailer (tag along) the weight distribution tongue weight limit is 1500 lbs with a 2 inch shank and 1700 lbs for a 2 1/2,
Looks like for WC (weight carrying) the limit is 1600 lbs for 2 inch and 1800 lbs for 2 1/2
Essentially, there is a 199lb variation requirement between 2 inch and 2 1/2 inch practical use. For most travel trailers a 2 inch receiver of the proper strength will be perfectly fine.
For those who are in the 1501-1700 lb tongue weight range you NEED a 2 and 1/2 receiver with the appropriate shank. I also think you are limited to either dual friction sway control, Reece Dual-Cam sway control or PullRite
Now, what to do if you are 1701 lbs? I think your ONLY option is to go with a PullRite hitch which is rated up to 2000 lbs.
Now, my inquisitive mind has to know, why would they rate a 2 inch receiver up to 2700 lbs? I don't have an answer... I can't even find Pintle hooks that are rated that high. I guess is just to be super beefy.
Thanks!
