2003 totoya sr5

Has anyone has experience towing a 2003 Toyota Tacoma SR5. It is two
wheel rear drive with a automatic transmission. I just got into a
Class A from a 5th wheel and trying to find a tow vehicle. I'm hoping
to tow four down .

yep, had one, hated it also. sort of silly buying something that has to be adapted to tow.

It's a shame more nice vehicles aren't towable four down, but those that ARE towable are towable by coincidence, not by plan. Some of the drive lines seem OK, so the manufacturer says OK.

Or to confirm towability, come onto this forum and see if you can find one person who sez "Yep, I do it all the time", then go ahead and do it. :s

I was ready to buy a manual shift Tacoma in 2009, and the manual stated Not Towable. Not even the manual. Went with Nissan Frontier, manual. In both Tacoma and Frontier 4x4 models, the transfer case does not have Neutral, so none of their automatic transmission trucks are towable. In Frontier, and the 2wd manual and the 4x4 were towable. So was Ranger. Tacoma, nope. Salesman, of course, says, "go ahead, people do it all the time..."
  • From the 2003 Tacoma owners manual.

Your vehicle is not designed to be dinghy towed (with four wheels on the ground) behind a motorhome.

    NOTICE
Do not tow your vehicle with four wheels on the ground. This may cause serious damage to your vehicle.
  • Check the REMCO website. My guess is that a lube pump will be required.
Of course, you can always get under it and remove the driveshaft from the differential yoke, then wrap the U-joint with tape to keep the caps in place, and tie the shaft to the under-body securely. be sure to put the hardware in a bag so it doesn't get lost. I used to do that with a Datsun pickup in my younger years. It works.
Well, it worked then. My middle is more than a little thicker now, maybe I couldn't get under there these days!
There may be a driveshaft disconnect kit available for it.
    Good luck.

IMO, the best four down toad is a Jeep Wrangler. I prefer a 2006 Rubicon Unlimited 2 door. I had one a while back, and it was great on the highway, easy to tow, and that 4.0 I-6 is about as bullet-proof an engine as you can find. But, be careful. There are so many wonderful accessories out there in after-market land that one can get many thousands of dollars invested without even realizing it!
