Had to miss understand. They are moving, they are wearing. But as I said, they are not working (driving the rear wheels) so the wear should be less.ChooChooMan74 wrote:
I wouldn't call my Liberty a vintage.
Yes, everything turns. It isn't hard miles like driving because there is a lot less stress on the parts, but yes, there will be unregistered miles.
OP here. I say vintage because I own a 96 Jeep Cherokee AUTO 4WD and I know exactly how it tows 4 down.
Problem is I have a friend with a 2007 (there about) Liberty who is insisting his mechanic told him that the towing miles HAD no effect of wearing out his rear universal joint with 36,000 on the odometer.
Thanks for the replies. :) - HarvardExplorer

If it is moving, it is wearing, even if it is properly lubricated.
Your friend either misunderstood what the mechanic said, or he needs to find a smarter mechanic.
I think he just misinterperted what he was told. I think he is confusing what happens downstream of the transfer case with what happens upstream of the transfer case (or vice versa).
I am just playing it safe in case the newer vehicles have electric disconnects that I do not know about. - mowermechExplorerIf it is moving, it is wearing, even if it is properly lubricated.

Therefore, technically speaking, the entire undercarriage of the vehicle has unrecorded miles on it, and the odometer reading is incorrect.
