As it turned out, there was 5 gallons even still in the main tank. (We also have a 30 gal Transfer Flow fuel tank that took another 28 gallons.) We don't like getting this low on fuel but we were coming out of Tucson and when we hit Vidal things looked good fuel wise. However when we hit the mountains just south of Barstow the fuel went fast and the totalizer burped and went from 11 gals to 7 in just a few miles. We stopped in Barstow looking for Diesel but had problems with paying 4.69 to $4.79 a gallon. We stopped, and restarted and the totalizer and fuel gauge went up to 11 and 1/8th respectively. ??? This brought up the question of exactly how much was actually in the tank(s) and how much of that we could actually use. I'm still not sure but running out is NOT what I want to do. The incentive to gamble for us was the $1.20 a gallon difference between Barstow and the next refuel point, Edwards AFB.
We ended up putting 3 gallons in at "4 points" just be safe. Still not sure if we could have made it. I am also concerned about the accuracy of our totalizer.

P. S. How do you re-prime a turbo-injected diesel?
