The 5.3/3.42 combination has better towing performance than some people are trying to lead you to believe.
2012 GMC's have a SIX SPEED transmission.
The transmission gives you overall gear ratios similar to that of a truck with a 4-speed transmission and 4.10 axle. You just don't use 6th gear while towing, but you have it for efficient cruising when unhitched.
Still, over the years, just using an informal mental survey of what the number say, and what people like to tow, I would recommend a MAXIMUM of 7500lbs total loaded weight for a trailer behind a 1500 series pickup truck.
