A suggestion might be to try a used small trailer if you and the spouse are still working. You won't have a ton of money invested ( it won't bother you much as it sits along side the house while you're working) and will learn what would work for you guys.
True, a smaller rig will fit easily in most places, but as stated before, a few more feet can be very nice--oh and a slide.
We started out in a Nash 22H and have grown to a 27 foot overall length with 1 slide. It goes pretty much everywhere and is a good fit for us.
