2013 Edge limited

Is any one towing (4 down) a 2013 Ford Edge Limited (FWD 3.5L)with the smart key (push to start button)?

As per the owners manual, you can tow it 4 down with the simple procedure of:

Run engine 5 minutes before towing, shifting into Drive and then Reverse before shifting back to Neutral (repeat this engine run procedure after 6 hours of towing - I do not generally tow that long per day). Then you shut off the motor and put it in the ACC mode (for me press the Start button one time w/o my foot on the brake). It all sounds pretty simple. But when I shut off the motor with the Edge in Neutral the two small LCD screens on each side of the speedometer remain powered up and a message to place the shifter into park displays on the left dash LCD. When I hit the start button to place the Edge in the ACC mode, the shift to Park message changes to a message that says it is in Accessory Mode and the big LCD (NAV) powers up. My question is to anyone who is towing this model Edge ...... Do you have any problems with the Edge's battery going dead while towing for a 4 to 6 hour run??? If so, how do you get around the car battery drain problem?

Thanks in advance for you comments.

  • We just traded for a 13 also. Don't know about dash lights etc staying on yet. Haven't towed it yet. They must shut off after a period or they could act as a drain.
  • If you can figure out which fuse it is, you could pull that fuse or install a Roadmaster in line fuse switch.
  • I have been towing the 2013 Ford Edge for two days now. The first day the battery did not go dead but the second day it did. You can shut off the power altogether but the manual states to leave the car in the accessory mode. I would think removing the power may affect something or why would the manual state to leave the car in the accessory power position? I would be cautious about removing power until we find out why the power is recommended to stay on.

I use the BlueOx wiring harness and the SMI Airforce One braking system so i do not need accessory vehicle power for those items. The Ford recommendation may be general for systems that need lights and braking power. I think this may make a difference in the need for the accessory power (I don't need it for those items) but i am uncertain about other vehicle systems.

You can add a charging line to the towed vehicle. I am considering the "Toad-Charge" product. Is sells for $110 plus shipping.

Does anyone have any facts on the situation.
    Thanks
    Don
