2015 GM hitch

I know the older GM vehicles had hitch problems. My 04.5 2500 ended up with a bent factory hitch which I replaced with a Reese Class V.

Now I have a 2015 GMC Sierra Denali 3/4 ton. The hitch looks substantially better than the older ones, and some searching hasn't popped up any issues.

But for all the experts and late model GM owners, did GM finally fix the hitch problem? and if so starting with what year?

I don't want to pop for a new hitch if I don't need to, but we do enough towing that if the current hitch isn't up to snuff, I'd rather replace it now.

  • How much $$$ would it cost to relieve the necessity to 'watch it', or 'keep an eye on it'...?

About $200 or a bit more for the BEST traditional designed receiver and about
1 hours labor to replace any OEM receiver...

If me, I'd just change it...but that is just my point of view
  • I've towed my TT a few times now, one trip was 80 miles one way. So far no issues at all with the factory hitch. I agree the construction and metal gage does not seem very robust, but seems adequate

    Thanks,

For now I think I'll just keep an eye on it as well.
  • I have a '12 GMC, with the "improved" hitch as stated previously. Have had no problems, but do check it occasionally.
  • The new hitch design started with the new '11 frame. I haven't heard of any issues either, but am checking my hitch occasionally. The metal used is not the thickest compared to an aftermarket hitch. Still looks better than the previous hitch.

Consider buying a new 2.5" shank so you don't need the 2.5"-2" adapter. Lots of stories of people loosing them because they forgot to remove it after removing the hitch.

    Congrats on the new truck!!!!
