2016 Keystone Cougar RV Bike Rack Warning

About a mile south of the GW Bridge traveling north on the New Jersey turnpike, passing cars kept waving at me and pointing to the rear of my 2016 34.5' Keystone Cougar. I pulled over to discover that the bike rack was dragging on the road. The rack has a label rating it to hold 200 lbs, and I had about 100 lbs on it. But the heavy steel beams that support it had bent and lowered the unit on to the road. Needless to say this was dangerous. I was able to remove its load and finally to travel away slowly with the rack still about 8" off the ground. But before I removed it, the dragging tire could well have ripped off and hit other cars ... a dangerous situation. Searching for this issue on the internet, I see that others have had the same problem - and they also warn this is dangerous. So if you have a similar bike rack, either do not use it, or inspect it frequently for bending steel supports. It could well be life-threatening.

  • It's not the weight that kills bike racks, it's the swaying in and out that fatigues the metal. It should always have a third attach point high on the rack not just the bumper.
  • The bike rate unit came new with the Keystone Cougar. It was not an aftermarket item that I purchased but came with my new rig.
