30 amp hookups, sewer hose

Hi all

Fairly new to RV'ing, so far this has not been an issue but we are planning some more extensive trips so...the motorhome came with a 30 amp male plug and a 20 amp typical household three prong adapter. It also came with a 6' gray water/sewer dump hose. This has been fine for the few parks we have so far but should I be thinking about getting some 110 V adapters and a longer dump hose? Thanks in advance.
  • I carry the standard 20ft sewer hose. I also have a portable macerator and enough 3/4 hose pieces for 100ft. which although not used often is so nice to have when needed. I also have many adaptors for electric hookups, a 30ft 30amp spare power cord and 3 sections of 25 ft. water hose.
  • Thanks for the great feedback. Will purchase the 50 amp male to 30 amp female adapter and at least 20' additional dump hose. When looking for a 30 amp female to 20 amp male adapter, didn't see such an animal, but saw 30 amp female to 15 amp male (typical household plug) adapters. I am assuming this is what I want.

Yes, that is the correct one. I have a 12" connector which gives you room inside the box so you can close the lid. I never used to have the 50-30A connector, but now that I have it that's all I use if there is a 50A hookup available.

You mmight want to get a 30-50 dogbone so you can plug into the 50 socket if the 30 is bad at a site,, And as others have said WAL*MART has 'em

if you have a short sewer hose I carry an assortment in special storage, but I'd like 2 10', One "RV to Ground and one extension as my recommended minimum or a 15' Rv to ground adn a 10' Extension

I have one RV-ground, unknown length (I think 15) one 10' Extension 1 20 and one that is hitting the trash next week (I hope) that I"m using now, it's the Free one that came with this 2005 when it was new.. I also have a 1 foot RV-ground (part of that of that free one improved upon)

And more if it's a long way off, I can pump it. But darn few places require I do that.
  • I carry 3 sections of Rhino sewer hose and use all three at least twice a year. You can get caps for the extensions and I would suggest drilling a couple 1/8" air holes in each for air circulation purposes. Allow your grey tank to fill up for a few days before dumping the black tank, then dump the grey.

Also get the adaptor/connector that attaches to the sewer end of your sewer hose. Most CG sewers are larger then your hose end and this will fill the gap. The one I have is orange and threaded on the outside.

Get a good expandable sewer hose support; some states require their use. I also suggest using one of the clear elbows.

Suggest you get at least one 30 amp extension.

I carry 2 long water hoses and a couple shorties (less clutter on the ground.
  • A lot of karma here of sewer hose length. With my holding tank, I can stay up to 5 days anywhere without connecting and just back up to dump on the way out, Spaces for class A's will typically have the dump connection toward the middle of the space and 5th wheelers spaces will have the connection at the back end. If you are staying for a month or two extra hose/sewer pipe may be useful.
  • Yes, lots of info on this subject. My rig is 24' so I do have to think about available storage space for sewer hose. I will check out a 20' rhino, hopefully with adapters for my 6' I will be OK, and can always dump when I move. Right now we will likely move every third day. Thanks for lots of feedback, it is appreciated.
  • Just an FYI - There have a been a couple posts from folks who have made simple sewer hose carriers out of 5 or 6 inch PVC. They've rigged them to attach under their campers or under the rear bumper. Perhaps a search will find them ?
  • We carry two sewer hoses that accordian out to 20 feet - one to back up the other in case one shoud develop a leak while on the road (as one did a few years ago). We also carry a sewer hose extension that accordians out to 10 feet ... so our total contiguous sewer hose length available is 30 feet (one of the 20 footers with the 10 foot extension on it).

Our 30 amp hookup cable is 30 feet long. We also carry along a heavy duty 50 foot 20 amp extension cord capable of running the RV's air conditioner or the RV's microwave (just not both at the same time). Plugging the 30 foot cable into the 50 foot extension cord gives us a 80 foot cord length for powering everything in the RV except for the air conditoner and microwave at the same time. We have had to use this 80 foot electrical setup once in a commercial RV campground's overflow area.

We also carry 100 feet of fresh water hose with us - one 50 footer and two 25 footers. We have had to use all of this length a few times to fill the fresh water tank on our RV trips.

We carry all the above along in our 24 foot Class C motorhome. We try to have several options and be as much as possible ready for anything on our trips, as we hate to have "minor emergencies" create unnecessary headaches.
