I installed a 50 amp receptacle in the garage. I have other receptacles nearby but someone that doesn't could install a 50 amp circuit and also feed other receptacles nearby, say a 30 amp 120v RV receptacle and a 20 amp 120v receptacle. The difference in price is the cost of the larger wire, the bigger circuit breaker, and possibly bigger conduit if that is how you're installing the circuit.
I actually installed a 70 amp subpanel and that also powers my welder and various receptacles. If you do install a subpanel and the garage is detached, NEC requires a separate ground at the subpanel, FYI.
