300 days at sea

I saw a movie once about a teenager that sailed around the world solo. It took him years and by the time he got back he was married.

Can't remember what it was called. Wish I could.

Oh WOW! I did not look at the boat earlier. The pointy end is way too close to the blunt end IMO. It sure is not a bluewater boat. sort of like fulltiming in a small minivan & expecting to drive nothing but 4X4 trails.

Still, there are those who have put to sea in less. Some even survived.

He is doing it on an Alberg 30'.

Same boat as our first sailboat, a 1967 Pearson Wanderer-- 30', designed by Carl Alberg. A tender boat that required a lot of trimming/lots of weather helm. Not a boat I would consider for trans-ocean work.

Shoot, I spent more than 300 days at sea and even got paid for it. It wasn't solo, though. I was in the U.S. Navy at the time. :)

This isn't about building a resume. Its about a guy who wants to do something for himself and wants to share it with others.

I wasn't inferring he is doing this to get fame or fortune or notoriety. I've known other sailors that have a bucket list of various voyages. I know one fella that's having his boat hauled from Maine to Florida, embarking on a sail to Cuba. Hey, if you've got the dough and the time, empty out that bucket.

Here's the deal, though. The world is filled with sailors that over-step their sailing skills. I've been on the radio with people begging to be picked up from boats that are much bigger than the guy referenced in this thread and not really in any danger. The oceans are a great equalizer, can be a big grinder.

I wish the guy the best of luck, he sounds like a guy that can handle himself. The electronic tracking and video sharing seem like a really cool idea. He could probably be the star of a reality show with that gear (virtual reality viewing would really enhance viewership). I'll try to be following along to see what happens.

From what I've read he loves boats and sailing. Seems to me he's found a way to get his sailing financed. :) It's not for me but if I could find a way to finance my motorcycling...

I totally agree. It definitely would not be for me.

Appears he's doing it more for notoriety and publicity than just for self satisfaction.

This isn't a new idea. Several people have done similar stunts (and it really is just a stunt). We get real antsy after just 2-3 days on the boat. I can see making a passage to get somewhere but to just sit out on the boat for months on end...no thanks.
