Depends, are we talking 360 vs 5.4 V8, 8.0 vs 6.8 V10's, or PowerStroke vs Cummins?
I give the edge to the Ford Gassers and the edge to the Cummins in the diesel. The V10's will handle it, they will be thirsty though. I do agree, the one ton dually would be a better fit...although if you watch the numbers you may be able to get away with a SRW.
Also, the payload on those early F250's was VERY light weight... as in my FIL has a Lariat F250 4x4 PSD and he was within 300-500 lbs of payload on my old 97 F150.
