5 things we don't love about our RV

It's been a few months since we made our "5 things we love about our RV" post and now that things are thawing out here in Pennsylvania we've begun thinking again. We'll be prepping our trailer over the next few weeks for the season and have started thinking about things we'd like to change. So, here's our list of 5 things we don't love about our trailer.

1. No slide: This isn't something we can change, but it would be REALLY nice to have a side slideout. We really discovered this when camping for Thanksgiving and squeezed 6 people into the dinette and sofa to eat. We'd like to have some extra space to move around in the kitchen and dinette area for sure.

2. Master bed position: It's great that we can have a bunkhouse and queen bed in a 25' trailer, but because the queen sits in the slide sideways I need to climb over my wife in the middle of the night for any trips to the bathroom. It would be nice to have the bed situated long ways, but this it another limitation we can't change.

3. Rear bumper: This is a small one, but the rear bumper is stamped and cannot hold a sewer hose. We also don't have a receiver to mount bike racks, etc. The bumper is mounted on the frame of the slide, so I'm not sure I want to put extra weight on there. I'm considering a 4x4 bumper and a hitch, but I really need to decide if I want the extra weight back there. This isn't a show stopper and we'll get around to this eventually.

4. Lack of insulation: When we purchased the trailer the water leaking through the roof was retained in the underbelly by the waterproof membrane. When we completed the repairs all the insulation was removed and left off for the time being to air out. When we went out for Thanksgiving you could really feel how cold the floors were and we used throw rugs as a temporary barrier. New insulation is on our list of fixes for this season.

5. Worn decals: The 14 year old vinyl graphics have seen better days. We own a large vinyl cutter and this is on our list of things to do, but it's not a priority. We'll have new graphics at some point when I decide I feel like peeling the old ones off and I think we'll be sticking with the circus theme.

Luckily it was much harder to come up with the list of things we don't like about our trailer. We still love the trailer, but have started looking for our next unit which may be a few years off.

What would you change about your RV?

    Yes!

    - Three extra inches added to width so I can sleep on the couch width-wise vs. making the bed to sleep lengthwise

Yes :(. I sleep diagonally on mine...

    - 4 to 5 more inches of ground clearance so I can at least poke my head under the chassis to give it a once over

This I do have. I can work under mine without jacking it up :). But... it's topheavy and it drives like it.

Otherwise, I love, love, love my RV! Seriously.

    Yes, again :).
  • Why buy a rv if there are five things you don't like about it?

Our shower could be bigger, but it's not bad at all.
  • Trailer in my signature....

Nothing to really complain about, but I do wish we got better fuel economy when on the road.

Small Bathroom is our big complaint. We are tall and the door closed, the room is too small for comfort.

My bathroom is in the hallway between the kitchen and the bedroom. Bathroom is tiny and my knees touch the door when sitting on the toilet. The nice thing is that when I open the door it blocks the hallway and even locks in the position, so I have plenty of room. The bedroom has a sliding door, so there is privacy. Strange layout, but it's nice that I have plenty of room, but it doesn't take up much space.

  • Since we have a 2505 as well your thoughts are like mine.

    I'll add:
    Hate the entire bathroom!
The manual bed slide - what a chore it is sometimes.
  • The AC is kind of noisy, but not a big deal here in the north.

Another water pump switch in the bathroom would be nice.

Can't think of anything else. I have done many mods to fix things I didn't like.

Second is turn to much on trip breaker(s).
  • Would be nice to have:

    - Adjustable steering wheel

    - Driver seat swivel

    - Inset base (even a protruding one would do!) for table leg near passenger/driver seats

    - Removable exterior snap-in-place solid vent covers for refrig and coffee pot, otherwise rain foods in behind the refrigerator.

    - More insulation

    - Additional water pump switch in the bathroom

    - Additional genset on/off at dashboard

    - Three extra inches added to width so I can sleep on the couch width-wise vs. making the bed to sleep lengthwise

    - Galley drawers and upper cabinet designed with function-over-form vs. form-over-function

    - 4 to 5 more inches of ground clearance so I can at least poke my head under the chassis to give it a once over

Otherwise, I love, love, love my RV! Seriously.
  • 1: No slide. Even a few feet for a dinette adds a lot of usable room.

2: Wrong type of RV. A motorhome can be parked in the driveway and ready for a trip here in Austin... a TT can't.

3: The A/C and its noise. Even ducted, the A/C unit I have is quite loud, so much that if I want to take a nap, I have to go to the bedroom and close the sliding door.

4: Lack of insulation. My TT has some fabric over the FW tank... but everything else is bare. Come below freezing weather, I can feel the chill coming from underneath my bed due to the storage compartment underneath.

5: The way the furnace vents work. Two vents just barely work (even with gentle but thorough vacuuming), with most of the air coming from a vent right under the A/C. It would be nice if the vents were on the sides so sand and junk doesn't freely fall into them.
