Doable and reasonably safe... and I also read it is not allowed by NEC as the connector should be NEMA 14-30 so as not to imply more power is available. NEMA 14-50 should be connected to 40 or 50 amp power. Only reason to go 40a would be if you had a bunch of #8 wire from another project. If spending money go #6 and 50 amp.
