5th Wheel outside winter storage

I am thinking about leaving my River Canyon 36' 5th wheel in Wyoming this winter. Any suggestions about how to cover it and what to do with the batteries?

  • Here in Calgary (Alberta, Canada) we store our 2005 5th wheel in the open in a storage facility with no cover. We get lots of snow and temps ranging from -40 to above freezing when the chinooks roll in (thanks goodness for the chinooks :) ). Just keep a vent slightly open to avoid condensation which can lead to mold. We've never had any problems with leaking, mold, flooring issues, etc... I'd have to think that it can't be much different where you are.

So I would say don't bother with a cover and just do the regular inspections and maintenance and you should be good to go...
  • I was at the Coachmen Annual rally a couple weeks back. I attended a seminar by Dicor that makes roof materials (several types) for many, many brands. These guys had been with the company a combined 42 years.

Their recommendation was to not use any cover on a trailer.

I was surprised too. They would rather we clean it more often. They have seen too many roofs damaged by covers (rubbing in the wind, strapped down too tight damaging the edges, etc).
  • The only additional issue you might see is the chance the flooring will split.
Due to the plywood shrinking different then the roll-flooring the flooring will sometimes split in RVs stored in really cold weather, like you would see in Wyoming.

The only time I've seen any issue with snow on RVs was a storm we had 20ish years ago that started as rain, then freezing rain, then snow, then back to rain. This left ice dams on the edges, gutters and down-spouts and the saturated snow caused many roofs to fail (homes, stores, RVs,.....)
  • I store my fifth wheel in Western New York. Average snowfall is voles to 200".

I pull my battery and store it at home. I have never covered my RV. The snow does a great job of covering it.
  • Winterize pull the batteries put down lots of rodent traps and go. No cover. At least not in Wyoming
