Winter Storage Inside/Outside

This is our first winter as a trailer owner. We live in Northern Illinois so we have plenty of snow and cold every year. Where ever we decide to store the trailer, we will have to pay. Currently, we have it stored outside. We have found that our fairgrounds will store them for about $420 all winter and we also found a climate controlled pole barn for about $550 for the winter. I am also concerned about mice getting in over the winter. Would one of these options be better for that too?

Check out caves. We have limestone caves near us and a friend stores his there. No need to winterize as it is a constant 56 degrees year round. I think it is about $50 a month. That said, I still think the best approach is to take it to Florida and live in it over the winter.

    I like the Florida option!
  • We store inside all year and have for years. Its nice when you go pick it up and the outside is spotless and the graphics still look like new. If you can afford it do it. You will not be sorry
  • Another vote for inside storage. The extra $$$ you pay for storage may well be offset by minimizing exposure to UV rays and the damaging effects of freezing/thawing cycles. And you won't have to do nearly as much maintenance on your roof such as cleaning and reapplying lap sealant. If you decide to sell your rig, it will be worth more. Or, if you plan to keep it for many years, it will help you do that!

It's not that important to have a climate controlled facility...the important issue is to avoid exposure to the elements. So, you may be able to find a non climate controlled storage area at a lower price.

To avoid rodents, you just have to do a thorough inspection and make sure there are no openings that the critters can get into. If it is where you can check it periodically...especially after you first store it, you can set a few mice traps in the event that they've found an opening you weren't aware of.
  • Def inside......RV's don't like Snow.....for the most part....

  • Inside, first choice. Outside, second choice. There are a lot of folks who will tell you to just winterize and let it be, it'll be fine. For us, it's a big investment and we want it to look like new for as long as possible. We store undercover at home 24/7, which helps a lot. DH is not able to crawl up on top to put the Adco cover on like he did with our ROO, so we're looking at adding siding to the Rockyport to make it as enclosed as possible.
  • We store our fiver in my son's pole barn, going on 16 years now. I even put in a concrete pad for the trailer, 35' by 20'. The rest of the pole barn is a gravel floor, except for the tool room. This inside storage REALLY protects you unit from those harsh winter storms. You will find mice ever ware, so go for that inside storage.
  • Not even close..store it inside.

Using an RV is not what's hard on it...Storing it outside for long periods of time is hard on them.
  • If you can afford it go for the $550. Search this Forum for ways to keep mice out of the rig. Hopefully you will be able to visit the rig during the winter to be sure `they' aren't making it home.
Over the years you will be glad to have such storage because the rig will be in better shape.
We also cover ours when not camping in the summer months and during the winter for the same reason.
P.S. we also live in northern Illinois.
