5th wheel rail based hitch rattle

for those of you who use a rail based hitch, how do you take of the slack between the hitch head and the rails.. its tiny, but its there.
I expect the hitch to rattle, but maybe with 2800lbs on it, it can't.

this is a B&W Patriot rail based hitch. new to 5th wheel, trailer week after next.

  • couldn't find any of these anywhere locally, so I used the innertube approach. $4.50 at Tractor Supply.

rubber mallet to get the pins back in.
    no rattle..!

  • I have used rails with a new Patriot. I just took some thin pieces of metal and wedged them in between the base and the rails. Threw a little silicon on them to keep them in place. Zero slop.
  • My Patriot has a little pin rattle in the rails too. I only notice it when going slow with the window down, like when pulling slow in the campground. It sounds like a couple of full bottles bumping together.

It doesn't bother me, as long as I know where it is coming from.

  • I'm surprised your Patriot rattles! My Reese was a rattle trap but when I went to a Patriot, in the same rails, I have to just about pound it to get it in. You might try removing the hitch from the rails then loosen the rail nuts slightly, then hit the rails "away" from each other and re-tighten the nuts.
