I firmly believe individuals have the ultimate right, and requirement, to protect ourselves, and our families. One can try to make an argument that it is a remote chance of happening, but Im thinking this family might have thought the same thing.
Im not saying go around in a super-paranoid manner, but be prepared. I am prepared, and I hope I never have to use it. BUT, if in a situation where I have to, I would rather have it and try to defend myself, than not have it and accept whatever happens.
Few years back there was a couple in Tennessee that were accosted by three or four guys. The girl was raped multiple times, and her boyfriend was made to watch. The killers then poured clorox down her throat, while she was still alive, to get rid of the DNA. Then they raped him, and killed him. Had he been armed, maybe it would have been different, maybe not. BUT, that story reinforced for me that I want to at least have a chance.
These nut jobs may not be as few and far between as we'd like.
