7 Pin Problem

2013 F350 XL with integrated brake controller. I use it to pull my equipment trailers in my landscape business. The past two days, I have picked up an annoying issue.

While driving down the road, the instrument panel will intermittently pop up "trailer disconnected". When this happens on the road, almost everything else still works. The brakes on the trailer work, I can engage them manually with the sliding knob in the truck, the trailer lights work, including the brake lights, and the trailer battery is getting a charge. The only thing I can't do is adjust the setting number for the brake controller. After a little while, it will say "trailer connected" and then I can adjust the setting. But after awhile, the whole process will start all over again.

I can swap out trailers but I just haven't had time. I can also use my other F350 on this trailer but again, no time. That should help me figure out whether its the truck or the trailer.

But before I do that, any ideas or has anyone had this issue before? If its the 7-pin, everything seems to be working just fine. I sprayed some lubricant into both connections but that made no difference.
  • The suggestions to check the connector are great. I had the same problem with my truck/trailer on a recent trip. I cleaned the connectors. Everything worked on the trailer as you mentioned. The disconnected message eventually came on and didn't reset. I stopped at a rest stop and checked under my trailer. Although not visible, one brake wire was cut where it was zip-tied to the axle. The wire insulation appeared as one piece, so the cut was not obvious while laying on the ground. Anyway, test-pulling on the wire pulled it apart. I spliced it back and taped it. No more messages the entire trip, even over rough roads. I made permanent repairs when we got back home....no disconnect messages to date. Before I made repairs, I guess the cut ends of the wire could re-touch and the problem would go away until I hit rough roads.
  • That connector has a module that can be replaced. Since you have a new PU get it replaced under warranty. My F250 needed the module replaced after a couple of years. No need to change out wiring. Just pop out connector module and put in a new one. 5 min job. I would try a contact cleaner first.

    Try to clean the connection

Yup. Start by cleaning both plugs and then testing each terminal for power when activated.

If that fails...then you start looking behind the scenes.
  • Let me know what you find out. Mine has been doing the same thing since I converted to disc brakes. The trailer is new though and I've tried new Tekonsha P3 and P2 brake controllers.
  • I had the same problem with mine; intermittent, usually when I hit a bump. Engaging the brakes manually would reconnect it must of the time. Replaced the connector on the truck...end of problem.
