I have my male 7 pin mounted in the side of the bed of my truck,I am towing a 5th wheel and the plug keeps vibrating loose next thing I have no trailer breaks or signals the cover latches down over female plug holding it in place but some how it still works its way loose?? anyone had similar problem? any remedies to keep this from happening.

  • With a 2008 as your tow vehicle, if it came from the factory with the 7 pin there will be an "OEM" connector on the back of it. This makes replacing the plug very easy as you only need to head to your local towing supply store and get a new one. If the connector is aftermarket and a hard wire you can still replace it but it takes more work.

the covers and springs wear out over time and let the plugs fall out. I even converted my Class A hardware to an OEM connector to make replacements in the future easier.

The cover on the female end (truck side) isn't holding enough tension downward onto the male end (trailer). Tape, zip tie, bungee or whatever to keep the cover down will do.

Time to replace the truck side!

My thoughts as well. The sockets I have had came with spring loaded doors to hold the plug in place. Springs get weak and door hinges become too corroded to move freely. Replace, repair, or jury rig the cover to hold it in place.

All you need to do is change your trailer side plug to a flat blade style. The twin blade style on your trailer is not fully inserting. It is only making point contact! Pollack makes a good replacement connector,

  • I use a small bungee cord wrapped around the cover to "lock" the plug inside the socket.
  • I use a long "wire tie" that came off a new garden hose packaging. Wrap it around the plug with the cover latched and it ain't coming loose 'til I say so.
  • I remember another member saying they used a small bungee cord to keep the connector attached. He wrapped the bungee cord around the connector and the cover to keep them latched together.
