We've not tried them on sand or steep hills yet. These 2nd generation ones have 4.9" tires so I can't imagine them not working well in sand. I've seen videos of people riding them in the snow and sand (on the Sondors owners facebook group site) and they appear fine. I can tell you they do fine in our driveway that is comprised of (mostly unpacked loose ) small light colored rocks that are locally washed from sand dredged from the river. You don't ride any other bike on them including the Fat Frank tires we had on our previous bike. Current price on their website is $600 but that now includes a LCD display that shows speed and basically gives you 5 speeds (torque levels) to choose from for the pedal assist and other options. That should make steep hills doable. LCD also allows you to increase the 20mph top speed. I've been to 25. We did get the upgraded battery for < $100 more. Shipping on ours was $180 each...flat rate for anywhere in the USA at the time we ordered them. I believe our two were $1650 total with the upgrades and shipping.
MPH, battery time, and top speed are all highly dependent on rider weight, wind, terrain and how much you do or don't pedal.
I wouldn't order the front suspension fork again but otherwise we are happy with them.
