I'm new to Toad life. Trying to figure toad math. Question: when towing four down, do I add tongue weight to gvw of tow vehicle or not?
I'm set up to tow a Jeep Wrangler rubicon with a winnibago Navion using the ready brute elite system. Jeep weighs 4200 with a full tank. Navion weighs 9860 with full gas, nothing else. Jeep gvwr is 5100. Navion gvwr is 11030 with gcvwr of 15020. If I don't have to add tongue weight to Navion gvw I'll be good to go. If I have to add that 420 lbs I'll have to be really careful with my load. I've looked all over the Internet and this is the first mention of four down tongue weight math I've found. Will really appreciate clarification of above comment.
How do you figure you have 420 lbs. tongue weight?
Try this; put your towbar on the Jeep. Hold the hitch end up. Do you think it weighs 420 lbs? Put the hitch end of the towbar on a bathroom scale. What is the actual weight? THAT is the "tongue weight" of the towbar/Jeep combination!
What is the rated capacity of your receiver on the motorhome? It is quite likely 3500 lbs., 5000 at the most. THAT is the important number.
