We also found that volunteering for our site and utilites was much better than working for a pittance of wages and being treated like children. The forestry service , county park and nature park where we have volunteered have always treated us like we were valuable and wanted. I disagree that you should keep working. You can supplement your income without actually earning any money by volunteering. The value of your site, utilities, perhaps laundry, propane etc is money that will not come out of your pocket. I would also recommend volunteer.gov as an excellent source of finding volunteer positions. You can choose the area you wish to be and look for a volunteer position. During your time off you can do the tourist thing.
