The E350s seem to come eith an awfully wide variety of engine sizes. Should I care which one I get?
Since 1992, E-series has offered an old pushrod V-6 (for a while) and three modular engines, two V-8s and a V-10. Get the V-10 to tow heavy, the 5.4 V-8 to tow much of anything. While the 4.6 still has a decent tow rating, you will be out of overdrive more often.
The last few years, after the front-end upgrade, the only real difference E-250 vs E-350 was 4.6 V-8 standard on the E-250 and 5.4 optional, while 5.4 was standard on E-350, with V-10 optional. 4.6 vs 5.4, not much difference in peak HP, but 5.4 has a flatter torque curve and reaches peak HP at lower RPM. Tuning of these engines for the van is different than for the cars (4.6) or pickups (5.4).
Is Edmunds telling the truth when it says the stock Chevy is the same (interior) length as the extended Ford?
Specifications show essentially the same interior length behind the point where the safety screen gets mounted to define the load area. Extended gains 20-22 inches, is a wheelbase increase on the Chevy. Where loadspace might be less would be if you get a hold of a E-series with the "crew" option which puts a bench seat behind the front seats, so the screen position gets moved behind that seat row.
