  • Coupler is bolted on, and I notice the wheel studs are longer than normal, probably for the optional disk brake kit that was offered when originally purchased new. I just wish that kit had mounting hole dementions.

For hydraulic surge, the Drum actuator has a check valve in the return flow. Disk does not.
Is the current trailer hitch bolted or welded? Welded, more work to convert.
Kodiak is a good brake kit.

Thanks for that reminder. It seems disc needs more pressure than drum, probably a smaller dia master cyl. But nothing that another $15 doesn't fix. :)

    Rich,

In your response you stated that you would need a $119 actuator. Looking on the etrailer website there appears to be a different actuator for disc brakes. I don't know the difference, but says that it is designed for disc brakes. Just something to think about.

Thanks for that info. Glad you got it squared away.
These plates are welded level/square, not that is makes any difference w/ disc brakes. And yes I'd need a $119 actuator.

    Rich,

I installed electric brakes on my older steerable Demco dolly. The only problem that I had was that the spindle mounting plate was at a 45 degree angle. I did have problems with that since the magnet was not at the bottom. I was told by Dexter engineers that it would be OK to mount them at the 4 o'clock position. Not true in my case, constant problems until one day the brake froze up and a blowout occurred. I had the plates removed and re-welded by a trailer repair facility and since have had no problems with them.

I thought about going with disc brakes, but decided against them due to the fact that I would have to buy an actuator for them and I was already set up to tow with electric brakes. JMO
