We just drove the Washington/Oregon coast road last September/October, and I thought many times: "This road and traffic would be so horrible during the busy season". :) Progress through some of the towns along the coast would stretch a person's patience.
It is some beautiful coastline though, and if that's the only time you have to travel, just be very patient and call as far ahead as you can for stopping places.
I just re-read and saw you have no kids. I'd rearrange the time and go during the "geezer season" as I put it. Kids back in school and lots of old folks around.
