My wife and I (mid 60's, no kids) are planning a trip from San Diego to Vancouver from about May 15 to Sept 15th. We have a 26' TT (overall length). We plan to stay mostly on the coastal highway but will go inland for anything worthwhile.
I realize this is the the busiest season, but this is when we can go. Looking for any advice re places to camp (RV parks, dry camping, state/county/unique ideas), along with any ideas on places to avoid, etc., with an eye to beating the crowds, when possible.
Also, any suggestions on things to do and see. We plan to spend a few days in LA and SF, not usual RV destinations, so any tips for these areas would be especially useful.
Thanks!
1. Take 101 for a scenic trip all the way to Vancover. Take I-5 for a more direct and faster trip.
2. Avoid L.A. like a plague especially towing a trailer. Save L.A. for another trip with just the car.
3. Stay in the Pismo Beach area your first stop. Take hwy. 126 to Ventura to get to 101
4. Take 101 to Hwy. 80 to Vallejo and then go west back to 101. I would avoid driving 101 through S.F. like the plague:). Drive to the Santa Rosa Area for your second stop. Then just drive your car back to visit S.F.
5. Drive to Brookings Oregon for your 3rd. stop. 2 or 3 RV parks right by the ocean in the Harbor.
There are numerious side trips , interesting sights at all three stops.
6. From Brookings Or. to Vancover select any town or point of interest or any RV park that is of your interest and/or that you can get reservations.
7. I stay at Seaside Or. at the Circle Creek RV park every year.
8. I really enjoy Whidy Island in Wa.
Finally---MAKE ALL YOUR RESERVATIONS TODAY!!!!! You are picking the high season for the whole west coast. Use the Good Sam Camp grounds internet site or buy the Good Sam Book for Camp grounds. I use both. MAKE YOUR RESERVATIONS FOR RV PARKS even if you are not 100% sure of the park or the area or town. YOU CAN ALWAYS CANCEL A RESERVATION, JUST BE AWARE OF THE CANCELLATION POLICY FOR EACH PARK. Good Sam will describe and rate each RV Park and give you the daily rates to help you select a RV park. Just type in an area, town or city and it will describe all the RV parks in that area.
