Whether or not you are coming back via the coast or down I-5, one fascinating route I'd suggest is going eastward out of Portland and take hwy 26 to near Bend via 26 or 20 and then over to 395 which is a major north/south route. You'll go up into the Cascades and can drive down through Oregon to the Ca. border. Or take a shorter route on 97 to Klamath Falls. From there you could take 140 over to Medford. This would take you through Rogue River NF. There a number of CGs along 140. We've stayed at Howard Prarie Lake & Lake of the Woods CGs.
The scenery along this route is totally amazing. Can't wait to do it again. Be aware that it can get cold in early Sept. in the Cascades. We camped in Bend early last Sept. and the entire CG of 300 sites froze up unexpectedly overnight and caught everyone off guard.
