I researched this dilemma ad nauseum when we first went full-time in 2005, having experienced the "Corelle-shatter". Decided to spring for the somewhat pricey new Tupperware line called Open House. (Now discontinued but available on Amazon and Ebay.) The plates, cereal bowls, and glasses were big, microwaveable, and I still have all of them.
