Air conditioner noise

One of my two rooftop air conditioners is very noisy. Clackety-clack sounds. It's the blower, not the cooling unit, because that sound is there when I turn on the fan. Anything I might be able to do to fix it, or is that a job for the pros?

Neighbor here at Cathead Creek was on his roof removing outer cover from his Carrier Air V (Same as OEM units on my RV) I wound up joining him, Same symptoms as you have, Loud "Rattle" type sound is how both he and I described it.

Well I showed him how to remove the inner cover over the blower and we had his wife fire it up... Heard the sound clearly.. (Much louder in fact than with the cover in place) this localized it.

We then inspected the blower.. he spotted many cracks in the "Hub" area which were allowing the rattle.

Late Friday Afternoon, Nearest RV store is 30 miles or more.. And will be closed by the time we get there... It's hot, he needs his A/C,, where can he get a replacement at this late date?

Well, recall I said OEM? one of mine had been replaced, when we "Dropped" (Set gently) the old one on the ground I went to work and salvaged several parts... Including the blower.. Had one in my basement (He was very happy, and cool that weekend).

I also inspected his to make sure he did not have the same problem that killed one of mine (The other one had it too... But I fixed that).

Another true story: Had a mud-dauber build a nest on one of my fans (the other end of the motor shaft)

Happy to hear your outcome. I have been trying to find the fan for the Carrier Air V for quite some time with no results. I wish I could find one as the patch job isn't going to last forever. It appears that parts are a thing of the past since Carrier doesn't make RV units any more. If anyone knows of or has one please let me know. I would be happy to take it off your hands.(compensate)The hub on my fan had cracked and the squirrel cage was rattling.

  • You have to remove the cover on top and inspect.
Get a mobile tech to help if need be.

  • While I will not know the answer for you, please post info about the make/model/etc of the AC unit.
